9 What is unique about Closer, making it seem right for these insincere times, is that the characters do not understand each other, or themselves.

8 It's a wittily written, powerfully acted tale of two intersecting London couples who meet, clash and reconfigure themselves and keep goading each other to the brink of sexual chaos.

8 ...the dialogue is sharply written and doesn't shy away from dropping sexually explicit language or letting a scene go for an uncomfortably lengthy time.

3 Don't be misled by the film's timing and its white poster into thinking Closer is a holiday film for the masses. On the contrary: Suffering through Closer is like watching a terrible train wreck in excruciatingly slow motion.
New York Post

7 Closer has a notably less devastating ending than on the stage - but it's still the kind of date movie best recommended for those looking to end a relationship.

7 Breathtakingly cruel and quietly devastating...

8 If Closer reminds you of sex, lies and videotape, it's not a coincidence. Steven Soderbergh acknowledged that his acclaimed directorial debut was largely inspired by Nichols' Carnal Knowledge.

5 With its pretty close-ups of pretty actors and pretty slow-motion shots set to pretty songs, Closer isn't complex--just precious.
Rolling Stone

8 ...the haunting, hypnotic Closer vibrates with eroticism, bruising laughs and dynamite performances from four attractive actors doing decidedly unattractive things.

6 ...a too-close-for-comfort movie experience.

5 ...while parts are provocative and forceful, the film as a whole collapses into a welter of misplaced intensity.
Los Angeles Times
Kenneth Turan
4 It's all dressed up but, frankly, it's got nowhere of interest to go.

7 ...a scalding tale of love and betrayal...
LA Weekly

4 A roundelay of devious, mendacious and self-obsessed behavior that solicits our sympathy without ever earning it...

8 ...a tastefully sordid relationship drama.

8 With uncompromising power, Closer examines the heartache and betrayals of people who remain strangers to each other, no matter how familiar they seem.

6 Adapted from the stage, the movie introduces four strangers whose lives intersect through chance encounters in a premise that teeters dangerously close to chick-flick hell.
Premiere

7 Most of the dialogue is pretty fresh, and it’s delivered with great brio, particularly by Clive Owen.

7 With all these talented folks behind it, why doesn't Closer quite hit the mark? The main reason is that it's too emotionally honest and psychologically dense for its own good.

Infatuation. Desire. Deceit. Passion. Hatred. All the ugly things we see in real life and relationships are too often glazed over in the movies. We see everything in this film, and I appreciate that.

I liked Danny Deckchair better.

If everyone talked this witty and had such thoughful retorts, we'd all hate each other. Some films do a good job of capturing reality. This one probably does too. It's just that it captures the part of reality that most people spend their lives trying to avoid. Why watch a movie about it?

In what kind of alternative casting universe is Julia Robers a photog, Natalie Portman a stripper, Clive Owen a dermatologist, and Jude Law an obit writer? I guess the same one where a case of mistaken identity over an internet sex hookup leads to courtship and marriage. Only Owen's kick-ass acting skills prevent it from being a total disaster. He also exposes Roberts as merely a mediocre actress, which she's always been. For a much, much better infidelity drama, check out We Don't Live Here Anymore.

The dialog seemed way to unreal for the situations. I did enjoy Clive Owens performance. Julia Roberts - meh.
